Wow! It's already May, and the end of the school year is just around the corner! This past month flew by and I can already tell that our stretch to the finish is going to as well!
Let me start with a huge THANK YOU to 3rd-5th grade parents! Because of your generosity, our Cinco de Mayo celebrations were an amazing success! I was a little nervous going into 16 separate fiestas in a 2-day period, but each and everyone fiesta was a hit! We had food to spare, and got to share the joy with teachers and friends! The students really took to learning about Cinco de Mayo as well, so we know the history and the reason to celebrate!
Before our Cinco de Mayo unit, fifth graders finished up a unit on places in a town, and ways to get around. We have now started our final unit for the year: cultural practices in Spanish speaking countries. We are going to learn about bargaining, and some traditional dances. This unit will culminate in a market day on May 26. At this market, students are encouraged to bring in 3-5 items from home to sell (they will not be bringing these back home, so make sure they are items you're ok with letting go of).
4th grade worked on nature words, and they are now focused on a unit about telling time in Spanish.
3rd grade has been working on school supplies, and is now working on items found in a school classroom.
Kindergarten through second grade worked on animals in Spanish, and was able to make a book about animals to take home! We are now working on a unit about butterflies, and will end the year learning typical summer activities!

It is May already! April was a very busy month for my students due to the MSTEP testing and some other school activities. We have been learning about numbers and family members during the month of April. My students are finishing their last touches on their mini-books about their families using the Arabic Language. In May, we are going to learn and explore the Food unit and some of my students will try Arabic/Middle Eastern food for the first time!
At the end of the Food unit my students will create a Cookbook using both Arabic and English languages. We are going to collect recipes from families and create an Arabic/English Cookbook. It can be holiday recipes, or ethnic specialties. Also, it could be few recipes in basic categories, such as main dishes, vegetables, salads, soups and desserts. My students will need some important information such as:
Name of recipe
A brief description of where it came from, why it's special
List of ingredients, including quantities
Special equipment that might not be in everyone's kitchen
Cooking directions, with temperature
Number of people it serves
Any special advice: What's the secret?
Along the units and on a daily bases in the classroom, students are able to communicate with my using their Arabic skills. The target language is used on a daily bases and also most of the directions are given in Arabic. Finally, Activities in my classroom are designed taking under consideration students' interests and strengths, giving to all students the opportunity of succeed.
