Think Stretch for Summer 2014

Thanks to our supportive PTO, students will receive a Think Stretch workbook again this year to work on during the summer months. Why is this important?  Well…it is important because we want students to learn as much as possible while they are at Mitchell School.  One of the ways we do this is making sure that kids have learning experiences during the summer.  One summer learning experience every student at Mitchell receives is Think Stretch.  As a reminder, students bring their Think Stretch back to school at the Welcome Back Picnic where they receive recognition for their work.

Every student should complete their Think Stretch workbook in the summer.

Suspicious Incident

Dear Mitchell Families,
I've received a report of a suspicious incident in the area closest to the school.  The incident involved a man in silver SUV approaching a student who was riding her bike and asking the student if she wanted candy.  The driver of the vehicle then drove ahead and waited for the student to approach again. The suspect driving the silver SUV is reported to be Caucasian man of about 25 years old with dark curly hair.
As I understand the incident, this situation occurred close to the school along Lorraine.
This incident was reported to the Ann Arbor Police, but I felt it was important to share the information with the larger community.
If you have information about this incident or something similar, please call the Ann Arbor Police Department.
Please also take this moment to review your family safety procedures with your children.  If you need help or if you have questions, please let me know.
Sincerely,
Kevin

The TELL Times - A Mitchell Student Produced Newspaper

Dear Mitchell Families,
As part of our school improvement work at Mitchell, students write each day . . . and they produce a variety of products including the following: A Guide To Mitchell School, A Visitor's Guide To Ann Arbor, The Ann Arbor-Ypsilanti Family Guide, The Mitchell Mustang Magazine, and The Gingerbread Man at Mitchell School.  These are just a few of the student produced titles I have in my office.  They are wonderful.
I am writing today to share an electronic version of some work our older English Language Learner students have produced.  It is called the "TELL Times," and it stands for "The English Language Leaner Times." I hope you'll take a moment to read this great work which was facilitated by one of our fabulous ELL teachers, Mrs. Susan Atkins.  It is really outstanding.  You can view the TELL Times by clicking the following link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3FLenwvd2mDM20zZ3hGOUJxemM/edit?usp=sharing
I hope you enjoy it!
Sincerely,
Kevin

Appreciate Teachers by Understanding What They Do | Edutopia

As we approach Teacher Appreciation Week, I will share the following link which I found interesting to read. It made me think of the exceptional teachers I work with at Mitchell School each day.
