Mitchell School Used-Book Give Away

One of our goals here at Mitchell School is that all students will spend time reading each day at home! This extra reading practice helps children develop as readers and develop an enjoyment for reading. To achieve this goal, we give away gently used books before winter break, spring break and summer break. Our winter break book give away is coming up the week of December 16. Please know this:

All Mitchell School students will have the opportunity to choose a free book to add to their at home reading libraries. It is important that students continue to read during the winter break. After your child reads his or her book some questions you might ask your child are, "What was the problem in the story?" "How was the problem solved?" and/or "What did you learn from the book?" This opportunity is made possible through our partnership with the Children's Literacy Network.

Late After School Pick-Up

We are noticing that some students are not being picked up on time from school. As a reminder, the bell rings at 3:59. It is not okay for students to be left unattended at school. Please plan to arrive in the school pick-up line by 3:59. We will do our very best to move the line of cars through the pick-up line as quickly and safely as possible. Thank you for your help.

New Visitor Management System

As part of the Ann Arbor Public School's commitment to student safety, every school in the district is instituting a new visitor management check-in system at the main entrance.

To help us keep track of who is in our schools during the school day we ask that you present your identification, either a driver's license or identification card, when you visit the school. If you don't have an identification card the Office Professional will assist you. Once you have presented your identification for the first time, you will be in the system and will no longer need to present your ID for future visits. This is true for visits to other AAPS schools as well.

The system creates a visitor badge for you to wear while you are visiting the school. The visitor management system also checks your identification against the national sex offender database.

The benefits of a visitor management system for our schools includes:

·       Up-to-date information about who is in our schools, where they are and the time they entered - especially important during any type of drill or emergency situation.

·       Creates customized visitor badges with photos to easily identify visitors, contractors, volunteers and parents.

·       Provides instant and accurate screening off the national sex offender registry and custom alerts for custody restrictions, banned visitors, etc.

The entrance procedures during the day will remain the same:

·       When requesting entrance, parents and guests will stand in front of the camera and press the buzzer to signal their request. The main front door and the main rear door have a buzzer & camera system. These are the only two doors in which you can enter. Please press the buzzer and be prepared to share why you're visiting school. If the office staff does not immediately answer the buzzer, please be patient and they will be with you shortly.

·       Guests and visitors should then go immediately to the office to sign in and wear a visitor's sticker.

While the district must comply with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) and the Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA), due diligence was conducted to ensure visitor's Personal Identifiable Information (PII) is secure. Note that the cost for the selected system comes as part of the Michigan State Police School Security grant that AAPS received.

This new system will begin on Monday, December 9, 2019. I appreciate your patience and support with the new system.

Thank you,

Matt

CAN Art & Design Update

Please join us in congratulating the fourth-grade student artists enrolled in CAN Art & Design's Fall session! The program is currently being featured in an exhibit at the Ann Arbor City Council Chambers.  This year's curriculum, The Kids' Table, is designed to empower CAN's young people to take ownership of their relationship with food and to experience how creating, discovering, and sharing food can build community locally and globally. You can read more about the exhibit at https://www.annarborartcenter.org/community-action-network-the-kids-table/ and learn more about the program at  https://www.canwashtenaw.org/canartdesign.  CAN Art & Design's Winter session will start in January. More information and sign up forms will be shared soon!

Inclement Weather

It's a good time to review weather protocols and prepare for the potential of school closings due to inclement weather. Remember, if your phone number is not current, or you have checked opt out of notifications; you will not receive calls from any AAPS building - including inclement weather notifications. Families must update contact information with the building secretary any time there is a change. If this information is not updated you will not receive school closing information.

The district will always strive to make weather-related decisions on regular school days by 5 am when possible. The district will brief media outlets & post on the AAPS website right away once a decision is made. Checking local media is a good way to stay in the 'know' regarding weather-related district closures. Also, we only notify when schools are closed, so 'no notification' means that school is open for the day. Be advised that you may review school safety information, including weather protocols at http://aaps.schoolwires.net/domain/2601

Thanksgiving Break

All Ann Arbor Public Schools will be closed from Wednesday, November 27 through Friday, November 29. School will reopen on Monday, December 2. I wish you all a wonderful and enjoyable Thanksgiving break!

Third Grade IB Unit

A message from our 3rd Grade teachers and kids... Third graders are currently engaged in an action project to support the Humane Society of Huron Valley. We began our "How We Organize Ourselves" unit by visiting the Humane Society and 3rd graders are passionate about exercising their citizenship by helping the animals in our community. Our central idea is that "citizens have responsibilities" and we are completing this action project as a learning experience to help 3rd graders understand how compassion drives citizenship. We are collecting donations from the Humane Society's wish list and would love your support. There is a flyer in your student's mailbox today with a complete list of items but gently used towels, blankets, items from the HSHV amazon wishlist, and unopened pet food items are highly appreciated. The donation boxes are located outside of the 3rd grade classrooms. Thank you for supporting our students and the animals of our community!

2019 AAPS Bond Proposal

One of the goals of the 2019 Bond Proposal is to create resilient schools prepared to adapt to climate change. Find out how the 2019 Bond is designed to chart a course towards carbon neutrality here

Did you know state law requires bond funds to be spent on capital projects and infrastructure, in fact the law makes it illegal for local districts to raise funds for operations, including teacher salaries and benefits. At the same time AAPS received $313 less in per pupil funding in the 2018-19 school year compared to the 2008-09 year. This proposal is designed so general fund dollars won't be diverted for facility repairs.

Come learn more about the proposal at 2019 Bond Information Superintendent Community Meetings. They take place Tuesday, October 22nd at the Ann Arbor District Library Westgate Branch at 2 PM; Thursday, October 24th at the downtown library at 7 PM; a Facebook Live event on Wednesday, October 30th at noon; and at the Westerman Preschool and Family Center on Friday, November 1st at 8:30 AM. More information including a video of the presentation and a schedule of additional meetings is available at a2schools.org/2019 bond.

Hispanic Heritage Month

Dear Families,

In Spanish class, our current unit of inquiry focuses on Hispanic Heritage Month.  Each grade is learning about a different Spanish speaking country:

PreK / Y5 – Bolivia

K – El Salvador

1 – Puerto Rico

2 РM̩xico

3 – Argentina

4 – Honduras

5 – Spain

In art, library, music, and physical education classes students are participating in activities that connect to these countries.  If you are interested in making connections at home as well, the following are some ways you can do that:

1.  Check out this website to see what our students are learning in class: https://sites.google.com/view/espanol-con-senora-gryak

2.  Students can bring in an artifact or picture to school from a Spanish speaking country to share with their classmates.  We will also hang these up in the front display case. We will label each artifact/picture and return them to you during the first week of November.

3. If someone in your family is originally from a Spanish speaking country and you would like to come in and share with your child's class about your country and culture, or share about your experience here in the United States as a Hispanic American we would love to learn from you!

Finally, on Friday, October 25th we will have two school assemblies to celebrate all we have been learning during Hispanic Heritage Month.  We are so fortunate to have Ballet Folklorico Moyocoyani Itzel, a Mexican group that will come exclusively to Mitchell from Detroit to share their dances and music with us.  You are warmly invited to attend this celebration.

Please feel free to email me at gryakr@aaps.k12.mi.usif you have any questions or would like to come in to present something to your child's class.

Sincerely,

Rachel Gryak

Spanish Teacher

gryakr@aaps.k12.mi.us

Queridas familias,

En la clase de español estamos enfocando nuestra unidad de estudios en el mes de herencia hispana.  Cada grado está aprendiendo sobre un país hispanohablante diferente:

PreK / Y5 – Bolivia

K – El Salvador

1 – Puerto Rico

2 РM̩xico

3 – Argentina

4 – Honduras

5 РEspa̱a

https://sites.google.com/view/espanol-con-senora-gryak

sinceramente,

Rachel Gryak

Thank you to all the parents and PTO members who helped to run a successful and enjoyable Fun Run for the Mitchell students. We all had a great time running together and enjoying the day!

Handicap Parking at Mitchell – Important!

Dear Mitchell Families,

In the past few weeks we've had people park in the handicap spaces (without a handicap authorized permit) and/or block access to the handicap parking spaces. These spaces need to be accessible to those who truly need them. Please do not park in the handicap space without the appropriate permit or block access to these spaces. If you have questions, please call me at school.

Thank you,

Matt

Camp Storer

During the week of October 14, Mitchell fifth grade students will have the opportunity to attend a three-day, two-night camp event at Camp Storer. This is an annual trip taken by our fifth-grade students each year and is designed to build, among other things, community, friendship and teamwork skills. It is always a highly anticipated event and the kids have a great time. I'd like to say thank you to the fifth-grade teachers who commit to this event and to the Mitchell PTO for supporting this trip!

Parking at Mitchell

There are some parking spots available in front of Mitchell School.  Additional parking is available in the Scarlett parking lot behind Mitchell School. Please DO NOT park in the front circle drive - ever. Parked cars create a traffic flow problem that can cause unsafe situations.

If you need to enter the building, please park in a parking space in one of our lots. At the end of the day, cars will line up on Lorraine as an entrance line into Mitchell and should not be parked on Lorraine. If you'd like to park, you can park in the Scarlett lot in the back or in the front Mitchell lot. Neighborhood Traffic and Speeding

Dear Mitchell Families,

As you drive your children to and from school, please be mindful of the following:

·       Follow all posted speed limit signs within our neighborhoods. Many families use Fernwood and Lorraine as the access roads to Mitchell. Please be safe and follow the speed limits signs.

·       Be mindful of idling engines at drop off and pick up.If you're waiting awhile, shutting engines off helps to reduce emissions.

·       As you arrive for pick up, please do not block the neighborhood driveways

Working together, we can be safe during pick up and drop off while also being good neighbors with the residents who live near Mitchell. If you have questions, I'm happy to talk with you.

Thank you!

Matt

This application is available through a web browser or the app stores. Bus Tracker enables parents and guardians to view multiple stops on an assigned route, including the scheduled arrival time for each stop. The service is free of charge to parents/guardians and provided at no additional cost to the school districts serviced by Durham School Services. Use of the application is voluntary.

Parents/Guardians Visiting During The School Day

I want to take a moment and reinforce our safety procedures for entering the building. We are safest when we work together, go slowly and look out for one another. Please know:

When requesting entrance, parents and guests will stand in front of the camera and press the buzzer to signal their request. The main front door and the main rear door have a buzzer & camera system. These are the only two doors in which you can enter. Please press the buzzer and be prepared to share why you're visiting school. If the office staff does not immediately answer the buzzer, please be patient and they will be with you shortly.

Guests and visitors should then go immediately to the office to sign in and wear a visitor's sticker.

I want to make sure that our parent community feels welcome and encouraged to visit school. I also want to make sure we provide a safe and secure environment for children. To do that, I need your help with these procedures. If you have questions, I'd be happy to talk with you.

If you have already set up an InfoSnap account in a prior year, you will be able to reuse that account and the snapcode to begin this year's forms. As a reminder, all students entering young fives, kindergarten, seventh grade, or new to the district will also need to present up-to-date immunization records to their school prior to the first day of school.

5th Grade Graduation

On Thursday, June 13 at 6:00 PM we will be holding our 5thgrade graduation ceremony in the multi-purpose room here at Mitchell. We hope all of our fifth-grade students and families can attend this event! The Mitchell PTO will be serving light refreshments after the ceremony. Thank you to Mr. Krigbaum, Mr. Popkey and Ms. Padgen for organizing this event.

Last Day of School and Report Cards

The last day of school is Friday, June 14 and students will be dismissed at 11:39 AM. This is a half-day for all Ann Arbor Public Schools students. Please plan to arrive at 11:39 to pick up your child. Additionally, year-end report cards will be sent home on this day. Please make sure to look over the report card with your child and celebrate the growth they've made as learners!

Summer Book Give-Away

Our summer book giveaway is fast approaching.  During the last week of school your child will have the opportunity to select new books to add to their home library.  Please check your child's backpack and set time aside daily to enjoy the books at home over the summer. The at home reading practice this summer is really important to prevent students from regressing over the summer months.

Lost and Found

The lost and found is piling up again with spring weather gear. Please plan to stop by the lost and found and claim any items that you own. All items not claimed by Friday, June 14 will be donated to charity. Thank you!
