Early Dismissal - February 25 at 1:29 PM

All AAPS elementary students will be released at 1:29 PM on Tuesday, February 25. Please plan to pick your child up on this day at 1:29 PM. Lunch will be served at school, buses will run as normal and will depart Mitchell by 1:40 PM. Buses will run the regular routes.

In District Transfer Window – Now Open

Please know the following:

  • If your student is currently enrolled in Preschool, you must complete a new full enrollment for Young Fives or Kindergarten, either as a new enrollment for your neighborhood school or an in-district transfer to request another school.
  • If your student is currently enrolled in Young 5's - 4th grades and you live in the Mitchell attendance area, your student will automatically roll-up to Mitchell next year.
  • If your student is currently enrolled as an in-district transfer in Young 5's, your student is automatically assigned to your neighborhood school for Kindergarten.  If you would like to return to Mitchell, or attend another AAPS school, you must apply for an in-district transfer to request your next school for Kindergarten, as this grade represents a level change within the Ann Arbor Public Schools.
  • If your student is currently enrolled under Schools of Choice or Non-Resident Child of Employee in Young 5's, you must apply for an in-district transfer to request your next school (Mitchell or other) for Kindergarten, as this grade represents a level change within the Ann Arbor Public Schools.
  • If your student is currently enrolled as an in-district transfer, Schools of Choice or Non-Resident Child of Employee, in grades Kindergarten – 4th, you do not need to reapply. Your child will automatically roll up to the next grade.  If you have moved, please contact the office to discuss your situation as soon as possible to determine the next steps.
  • If your student is currently enrolled as an in-district transfer in the 5th grade, your student is automatically assigned to your neighborhood school for 6th grade.  If you would like to attend another AAPS middle school, you must apply for an in-district transfer to request your next school.
  • If your student is currently enrolled under Schools of Choice or Non-Resident Child of Employee, in the 5th Grade, you must apply for an in-district transfer to request the next school, as this grade also represents a level change within the Ann Arbor Public Schools.

You can find enrollment information at a2schools.org/enrollment and contact information at 734-994-2249 or email at enroll@a2schools.org.

Parking at Mitchell – Rear Lot/Scarlett Lot

We've noticed many families parking illegally in the rear lot/Scarlett parking lot.

Please make sure that you:

·      Park within the marked, designated spots only.

Please make sure that you do not:

·      Park at the end of the row and block the exit lane near the buses. This lane needs to be clear for exiting buses and exiting cars.

Thank you for your help in keeping the exit lane free of parked cars and keeping our kids safe at dismissal. You'll notice new no parking signs in the rear lot soon. If you have questions now, please call the school and ask for Matt – I'm happy to help.

Attendance Reminder – Please Call the Office

If your child is going to miss school due to illness or for other reasons, please make sure you call the office to report your child's absence by 9:00 AM.

Influenza Update

Influenza is currently circulating in the community and several students and staff have been diagnosed with it recently. AAPS is following the Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommendations to prevent the spread of flu in schools, including implementing disinfection protocols and daily cleaning of "high touch" areas.

What parents can do to stop flu:

·       Getting themselves and their children vaccinated (it's not too late).

·       Knowing the symptoms of flu, which can include fever, sore throat, cough, runny or stuffy nose, chills, headache, and stomach symptoms.

·       Teaching children to wash their hands frequently using the Centers for Disease Control Handwashing guidelines.

·       Keeping children who are sick at home. Students and staff should stay home for at least 24 hours after the fever is gone. The fever should be gone without the use of fever-reducing medicine.

·       Teaching children to cover their coughs and sneezes with a tissue or bent arm, and to avoid touching their face with unwashed hands.

·       Reading the CDS's The Flu: A Guide for Parents.

MindSET Outreach Events

The University of Michigan Tau Beta Pi chapter welcomes all 4th and 5th grade students interested in STEM to participate in MindSET outreach events from 2 to 5 PM on March 14th, 21st, and 28th. Current U of M engineering students offer hands-on, design-based learning activities. Register here

Girl Scouts Sock Drive

The girl scouts troop at Mitchell is conducting a new sock drive to benefit Hannah's Socks, a non-profit organization in Southeast Michigan and Ohio. Socks of any size are welcomed. You can drop off donated socks in the main hallway just under the PTO bulletin board!

Coronavirus Update

We are aware that some Ann Arbor Public Schools families are becoming concerned about the novel coronavirus. At this time, there are no confirmed cases of the virus in Michigan or Washtenaw County. AAPS is in frequent communication with the Washtenaw County Health Department to monitor the situation locally. As information changes, AAPS will follow guidance from the WCHD. As with any respiratory illness, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that people take simple steps such as washing hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. The WCHD, the State of Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and the CDC are regularly updating their information.

Mitchell PTO Meeting

The Mitchell PTO will be meeting on Tuesday, February 18 at 6:00 pm in the community center. All families are welcome and encouraged to attend. I hope to see you there!
