Mitchell Expansion Update - Colors of New Addition

Dear Mitchell PTO and Staff,

Thank you for the feedback about the colors of the Mitchell phase 1 addition.

It isn't surprising I've heard a range of reactions and input around the color choice of the outside of the building.  To be perfectly clear, I am thankful and happy to receive this input.  It is helpful especially in a moment that requires a quicker decision.

The input I've received about the proposed vibrant green colors has included the following (which includes general reactions from parents and/or teachers):
- I love it.
- I wish it was a slightly darker shade of green.
- I wish it was blue.
- I like the vibrant greens but I want to understand and know more about the overall look of the building that includes phase 2 and 3.
- Vibrant greens make perfect sense for an elementary building
- I connect with the "blades of grass" idea....connects to being a World School for me.
- I like the idea of multiple colors being represented like at King School
- The pop of color is exciting, and I think the kids will love it.
- The color is good, but I think it is really about what happens in the classroom.

In response to this, I have:
1. Checked in with teachers again today to get another read on their input.  All teachers have expressed a range of positive input that includes "I love it" (which is most teachers) to "I like it" or "I am OK with it."
2. I am emailing this to the group that includes PTO parents to receive any additional feedback that was not expressed last night.  The feedback I received last night seemed about 50% "I love it" or "Looks good" and 50% "I'm fine with blades of grass but how about something darker" or "I'm thinking of multiple colors" or "I'm not in love with the green".

In making this decision (albeit with a quick turn around), I want to be clear I'm listening.  Most of what I'm hearing (especially from our teachers) is that the bright greens are exciting and will be a welcome update that connects with the change our school is going through.  It will also say our school is different and special as opposed to the current colors which say our school is a drab eye sore.

I'm also hearing that it would help to know more about what the overall look of the building would be if phase 2 and 3 were completed.  I've asked for some help from the architects with this piece.

In addition, I've also asked to see a version of the school with blues instead of greens.  I've done this to entertain the ideas, but at the same time I also know the majority of input (~85%) is saying "go green".

I also want to remind there are other opportunities for input if you'd like to give it:
- Parent resource room (colors, furniture, uses of, etc)
- Classroom furniture
- Input on phase 2 and phase 3 of the Mitchell expansion (if and when that occurs).

Thank you for any additional input.
Kevin

Art Class!

Congratulations to Jamie in Ms. Padgen's class who won first place in a logo design contest through the Univeristy of Michigan's Natural Resources and Environment department.

Students were asked to create a logo for the department's initiative called F.L.A.R.E. (Forests and Livelihoods: Assessment, Research, and Engagement) which studies forests all over the world and helps to create policies to protect them.  Out of 200 elementary entries Jamie won first place!

Mitchell PTO Board Nominations - Due 4/12

PTO Board Nominations - Spanish Mitchell PTO Board Nominations form.pdf

(Spanish below)

The Mitchell Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) Needs You!

Your IDEAS. Your INPUT. Your PARTICIPATION. Your VOICE.

**If you have any questions about the board positions or the PTO in general, please feel free to contact Chris Kendall at (313) 212-5864 or cas_counsellor@hotmail.com**  If you'd like to email your nominations, please email them directly to Chris, otherwise, please turn in your form before the April 12th PTO Meeting.

Have you ever wondered . . .

  • How the activities and programs at Mitchell come to be?
  • How you can help if you have a lot of time to give?
  • How you can help if you only have a little time to give?
  • How you can get your great idea implemented at Mitchell?
  • How you can have a voice in what goes on at Mitchell school?
  • How you can meet and connect with more Mitchell parents and families?

Well here is your answer to all of these questions –

GET INVOLVED WITH THE MITCHELL PTO!

Who are we and what do we do?  The Mitchell PTO is made up of parents/guardians of Mitchell students, as well as Mitchell administrators and staff.  We are a collaborative group working together to provide social opportunities, educational programs, fund raising, and other initiatives in support of the social and educational wellbeing of our kids.

How can you get involved?  There are MANY ways that you can get involved, whether you have a little time or a lot, from volunteering for an hour or two at Fall Fest, Book Fair or other activity, to taking on a leadership position on the Executive Board (i.e. President, Treasurer, etc.).  There are many opportunities to help throughout the school year and we encourage you to get involved even if you feel you only have a small amount of time to give.  Our goal is to have everyone do a little so that no one has to do a lot.

We are currently in the early planning stages for next year's activities and we want to hear from you! First and foremost, we need to elect a new Executive Board for the 2016-17 school year.  All positions are currently open for nominations, including officer positions as well committee chairs and members at large (nomination form attached with descriptions of each position).  Each position can also be a shared position (i.e. Co-Treasurers, Co-Committee Chair, etc.) so if you and another fellow Mitchell parent are considering a Board position but aren't sure if you want to do it alone, sign up together and it will be less work for both of you!

All parents are welcome and the more participation we have, the better we will be at supporting a great social and educational environment at Mitchell for our kids. We also welcome all opinions and ideas.  The more input we have from many different voices, the more representative we will be of the entire Mitchell community.

Here is the first way that you can help: Do you know someone who would be a great voice for the Mitchell community?  Then nominate them for a PTO position! Remember that you can nominate yourself or someone else, and that all nominees will be contacted prior to the election in May to confirm whether or not they wish to accept the nomination.

Please return the attached nomination form to the school office by APRIL 8, 2016.

GET YOUR NOMINATIONS IN TODAY!!

**If you have any questions about the board positions or the PTO in general, please feel free to contact Chris Kendall at (313) 212-5864 or cas_counsellor@hotmail.com**
