All Are Welcome at Mitchell School!

It's important to me that all families know and understand that everyone is welcome at Mitchell School. We stand strong in our support of immigrant, Muslim, and refugee students (and their families). I want you to know:

  • We will continue in our commitment and practice to ensure that a child's immigration status will have no impact whatsoever on his or her education in the AAPS.
  • We will not ask about a child's immigration status at school. Public school districts have a legal obligation to enroll students regardless of their immigration status and without discrimination on the basis of race, color or national origin.
  • We will continue to partner and coordinate with our many excellent Ann Arbor community organizations and resources to connect additional support for our families beyond the school setting.

As we look forward to the remainder of the school year and enrollment for 2017-18, please be assured that we value our diversity and welcome all families. If you know of any Kindergarten or Young 5's families who are considering Mitchell School for the fall of 2017 please let them know that we are enrolling now!

If you have any questions, please call the school office at 997.1216 or email me at hiltonm@aaps.k12.mi.us

Sincerely,

Matt

Sinceramente,

Mate

International Baccalaureate Update

As part of our work to become an authorized IB World School, we are creating four policies that will become an integral part of our educational philosophy. These policies are Assessment, Language, Academic Honesty, and Inclusion. Over the coming months, I will summarize each of these policies in the Mitchell eNotes and on the website so families can begin to understand these policies.

One of the four policies is the Language Policy. At Mitchell, Scarlett and Huron a team of people has developed a beginning version of the Ann Arbor International Baccalaureate Language Policy. The Language Policy in an IB school recognizes that language is at the heart of learning. The language policy also emphasizes the importance of a student's home language or mother tongue. The policy describes the supports a school provides for students who are learning in a language other than their mother tongue. We will be sharing these policies in more detail soon!
