Mitchell School Used-Book Give Away

One of our goals here at Mitchell School is that all students will spend time reading each day at home! This extra reading practice helps children develop as readers and develop an enjoyment for reading. To achieve this goal, we give away gently used books before winter break, spring break and summer break. Our winter break book give away is coming up the week of December 18th. Please know this:

All Mitchell School students will have the opportunity to choose a free book to add to their at home reading libraries. It is important that students continue to read during the winter break. After your child reads his or her book some questions you might ask your child are, "What was the problem in the story?" "How was the problem solved?" and/or "What did you learn from the book?" This opportunity is made possible through our partnership with the Children's Literacy Network.

School Improvement Update - From Mr. Hilton

Dear Mitchell Families,

I am writing to share that the Mitchell school improvement plan has been updated for the 2017-18 school year. You can find it under the "Our School” tab of the school website or you can access it by using the link at the bottom of this communication.

The plan is important because Mitchell School achievement data is not yet what we expect. As of fall 2017, we see patterns of achievement that are both encouraging and concerning:
·       NWEA scores that, on average, show growth rates that represent more than one year of growth in a school year for all grades at Mitchell last year in reading and math;
·       Report card data that, on average, shows growth rates that represents more than one year of growth for all grades at Mitchell last year in the area of reading;
·       M-Step proficiency rates in reading and math that are lower than other schools in Ann Arbor but higher on average than other schools in Michigan;
·       NWEA scores and M-Step achievement rates that indicate certain groups of students predictably achieve less than other groups of students. These groups of students include African American students, Hispanic or Latino students, Special Education students, Economically Disadvantaged students and English Language Learners.

The school improvement plan is based on achievement information AND an analysis of our achievement data to understand which areas of teaching need to be focused upon most this year to best address student achievement needs.

For the 2017-18 school year, we believe the following areas are most important to address to maximize student growth and proficiency:
·       IB Units of Inquiry:
o    Delivery of units that integrate state standards in science, social studies and literacy
·       Literacy Instruction Including:
o    Guided reading and writing instruction
o    Vocabulary instruction and development
o    Additional reading support for students who show need
·       Math Instruction Including:
o    Guided math instruction
o    Vocabulary instruction and development
o    Extended day and extended year support for students who show need

I’m also asking families to support student achievement at Mitchell by:
·       Reading at home each night for at least 15 minutes
·       Practicing math facts at home – addition, subtraction and multiplication, division as appropriate
·       Attending school events
·       Talking with your child’s teacher regularly
These at home supports will help your child to grow as a learner and achieve at high levels.

The Mitchell staff and I expect even better results to report by the end of this school year.  Our goal is to have all students learning at the expected grade level proficiency at Mitchell School. I hope you’ll feel free to ask questions about achievement and school improvement at Mitchell. I’d be happy to talk with you.

You can find the plan by clicking HERE.

Sincerely,

Matt

We are looking for coaches and student interest. Without coaches, we can't have teams. Coaches DO NOT have to be science experts!  Please consider coaching your son or daughter and a few other students. Thank You Mitchell School & Year End Update!

June 16, 2017

Dear Mitchell Parents, Teachers and Community Members,

As we finish the 2016-17 school year, I'd like to take a moment to express my gratitude for our year together and share some updates about Mitchell School. This is a moment to celebrate our community.

First and foremost, I want to express my thanks for the children who attend Mitchell, for the families who entrust us with their care, for the teachers who do a remarkable job with our children on a daily basis, and for the community members who contribute to the well-being of our school. I appreciate the thoughtfulness of every member of our school community. This is truly a wonderful place and I'm thankful to be part of it.

I'd also like to highlight some exciting news! The Mitchell School students and staff showed some excellent academic gains this year.

When looking at reading achievement by grade level, as measured by the NWEA test, Mitchell students made the following, average achievement gains:

  • Kindergarten:  122% (of expected growth on average)
  • First: 115%
  • Second: 121%
  • Third: 127%
  • Fourth: 131%
  • Fifth: 135%

When looking at math achievement by grade level, as measured by the NWEA test, Mitchell students made the following, average achievement gains:

  • Kindergarten: 136% (of expected growth on average)
  • First: 145%
  • Second: 136%
  • Third: 121%
  • Fourth: 133%
  • Fifth: 146%

These kinds of achievement gains are not typical at all schools. Thank you for your support and dedication to the students at Mitchell. It's awesome!

Lastly, I'd like you to know that we are expecting to soon announce that we are an authorized International Baccalaureate World School. We hope this will happen over the next few weeks. I wish you all a wonderful summer vacation!

Sincerely,
Matt Hilton

Report Cards

Year-end report cards came home today. Please make sure to look over the report card with your child and celebrate the growth they have made as learners this year! AND, most importantly, please have children read for at least 15 minutes each day over the summer months. This will help to ensure that there is no summer learning loss!

ThinkStretch Workbooks

Your child should have brought home a summer ThinkStretch workbook that will help them to maintaining learning over the summer months! Children should work in these books through the summer and bring them back to the welcome back picnic this fall to receive a medal for their work. Additionally, please make sure kids are reading this summer. The best way to minimize summer reading loss is to read over the summer!

Registration for 2017-18

We are preparing for next year! We will be using InfoSnap, an online student pre- registration validation system, to confirm your student's enrollment for the upcoming school year. The system is a secure process, which allows the district to verify all student demographic, emergency and medical contact information for your child prior to the start of the new school year. The system will also allow you to electronically sign the annual permission forms for school district policies.

You should have received an email communication from backtoschool@a2schools.org with instructions on how to access the system for your student. The email will contain a link/instructions and a secure "snapcode" that links directly to your student's information. Please check your inbox or SPAM folder for a message from backtoschool@a2schools.org

Returning Mitchell Students - Registration for 2017-18 Starts Now!

The Ann Arbor School District is preparing for the 2017-18 school year.

This week you should have received an email communication in email from backtoschool@a2schools.org with instructions on how to access the system for your student. The email will contain a link/instructions and a secure "snapcode" that links directly to your student's information. Please check your inbox or SPAM folder for a message from backtoschool@a2schools.org.
