Learn About IB @ Scarlett Middle School on 1/12/17

Please join us for an informational night for any family interested in learning about the IB Middle Years Programme at Scarlett Middle School. We will begin at 6:30 PM.

BrainFreeze!

Mitchell students will be bringing home a BrainFreeze packet on 12/22. This is a great way for kids to stay engaged in reading and math over the winter break. You'll notice there are opportunities for students to practice their math facts and log the number of minutes they spend reading.  They can log the minutes using the books they chose from the used book give away!

Pajama Day - December 22

The Mitchell School Student Council has decided to host pajama day on Thursday, December 22! All students who would like to wear their pajama's to school this day are welcome to do so. Please remember, students will still have outdoor recess so don't forget the winter weather gear.

Thank You!

Thank you to the Mitchell PTO and all Mitchell parents for the potluck luncheon this past Wednesday. The food was great! We are all thankful to be part of this wonderful community.

International Baccalaureate Update – From Mrs. Rothman

Students are learning about the Learner Profile in their classrooms in many ways. This week in Kindergarten, students are learning about their own personal growth and development. Students are collecting memories from their lives at home, and learning about sharing these memories with others. The Learner Profile attributes for this Kindergarten unit are reflective and communicator. During this Unit of Inquiry, students are being reflective about their experiences and are communicating what changes they see during their own growth.

Mitchell School Used Book Give Away

One of our goals here at Mitchell School is that all students will spend time reading each day at home! This extra reading practice helps children develop as readers and develop an enjoyment for reading. To achieve this goal, we give away gently used books before winter break, spring break and summer break. Our winter break book give away is coming up the week of December 19.

Please know that all Mitchell School students will have the opportunity to choose a free book to add to their at home reading libraries. It is important that students continue to read during the winter break. After your child reads his or her book some questions you might ask your child are, "What was the problem in the story?" "How was the problem solved?" and/or "What did you learn from the book?" This opportunity is made possible through our partnership with the Children's Literacy Network.

Winter Weather is Here!

As we move into winter weather, children will continue to have recess and be outside. Please send your child to school with the appropriate coat, hat, mittens, snow pants and boots. We will be sure to have them wear it!

Late Student Arrivals

We are noticing many children arriving late to school. As a friendly reminder, school starts at 8:47 AM. You can drop your children off as early as 8:35 AM. It's important that children are here on time. Thank you for your help!

Happy Thanksgiving!

As I look forward to the Thanksgiving break, I want to express my thanks and gratitude for the children who attend Mitchell School, for the families who entrust us with their care, for the teachers who choose to work at Mitchell, and for the community members who contribute to our school. We have a wonderful learning community that includes the strengths of diversity, compassion, caring and excellence. I see this everyday through the interactions of students, staff and families at Mitchell.

We are also a learning community that is working toward becoming an IB World School. Our work toward becoming an IB school brings the very best teaching and learning practices in the world to Mitchell, Scarlett, and Huron. These teaching and learning practices include:

-An inquiry model of teaching and learning where students ask questions, seek answers and take action

-An emphasis on action; students using what they've learned to impact their world

-The development of global awareness; students connecting to local, national, and global perspectives and issues through curriculum connections

-You can find more information about our development at: http://ib.a2schools.org

Finally, Mitchell School is home to exceptional teachers who work very hard to meet the academic, social, and emotional needs of all children. I feel very lucky to be a member of this learning community and I wish you all a restful Thanksgiving holiday filled with joy!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Sincerely,

Matt & Kevin

International Baccalaureate Update – From Mrs. Rothman

Students are learning about the Learner Profile in their classrooms in many ways. Each IB Unit of Inquiry has two specific Learner Profile attributes associated with it. An example: fourth graders are studying how communities are defined by governments, focusing on the attributes principled and knowledgeable. In this fourth grade Unit, students are learning the ways in which citizens of a community behave in principled ways. They are also learning about how important it is for citizens to be knowledgeable.

Mitchell School Community Safety

At the Mitchell PTO meeting this week, a parent shared that her middle school child was verbally harassed by a driver on Platt while walking home. I'm sharing this with our community to build an awareness of this occurrence and I'm asking that we all continue to keep a lookout for our children. The extra eyes and ears make all the difference to our community. If you see/hear this type of behavior, please inform the school office. Thank you.

Report Cards Sent Home - November 22

Student report cards will be sent home on Tuesday, November 22. This is an opportunity to talk with your child about their learning and celebrate growth. It's also an opportunity to set improvement goals. If you have questions, please talk with your child's teacher.

PTO Meeting - Tuesday, 11/16 @ 6 PM

Mitchell PTO Message:

Good morning, Mustangs, let's hold one another closer this week and show the world our respect for one another and our love of education and our community. Thank you all for being your unique selves, I couldn't be happier that my family is part of such a diverse, strong and supportive group at Mitchell.  Last Friday's Movie Night was a wonderful reminder that we can always come together and enjoy each other's company.  As JK Rowling wrote, "Differences of habit and language are nothing at all if our aims are identical and our hearts are open."

This week there are a few more opportunities for the adults in the Mitchell community to get together.  On Tuesday night at 6 to 7 the November PTO meeting is being held.  Please come, all voices are welcome!

We are also recruiting volunteers to help run the Holiday Shop.  All classes in the school will have a chance to browse and buy, and the shop will also be open to the after school crowd.  Sign up for as many spots as your schedule allows!

- Help your child with homework

- Talk with your child's teacher

- Understand your doctor

- Talk with people in stores

- Understand banks

- Meet others who are learning English

This group welcomes English speakers, Spanish speakers, and speakers of other languages.

Thank you to our partners at Washtenaw Literacy for their collaboration and willingness to host this group in our school community.

Spanish Language Group

This group will learn and practice the friendly Spanish language that children are learning in their Spanish classes at Mitchell.  The group will play games, sing, and create materials to take home and use together--and enjoy getting to know each other while learning language! The group will meet on Tuesday evenings from 6:00pm-7:00pm on October 4, 11, 18, and 25. This group welcomes English speakers, Spanish speakers, and speakers of other languages.  Younger and older children are welcome to participate with their family members.  Bring your family to play and enjoy friendly Spanish!  Learn the world language your children are learning at school!

Pre-K Preschool Welcome Letter - Drop Off Video Instructions

Hello Mitchell Preschool Families,

Tomorrow is the first day of school for Preschool at Mitchell. We are very excited and can't wait to see everyone tomorrow.
We have decided to change our start and end times to ensure a smooth and safe drop off and pick up for your child.

You will drop you child off at 8:30 and pick them up at 3:30.

I am including a YouTube link with a short video showing the drop off and pick up location. (follow the signs as if you were going to Scarlett Middle School -- turn left at the sign that says "staff and visiter parking only" -- you will see a sign for "Pre K".
If you arrive later 8:35 (drop off) or 3:35 (pick up), you must come to the front entrance of Mitchell and bring your child into the building. Please sign in at the office for late drop off. Courtney or myself will be near the office with your child if you are late for pick up. Please do not leave your child at the drop off area unless you see a Mitchell staff member. All preschool children must have an adult with them at all times.

PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT ANYONE PICKING UP YOUR CHILD HAS A PHOTO ID AND IS ON THE EMERGENCY CARD -- WE WILL NOT RELEASE YOUR CHILD TO ANYONE THAT IS NOT ON THE EMERGENCY CARD -- We will have the emergency cards available at drop off and pick up for you to look at and make any necessary changes. You can always add family and friends to the emergency card at anytime.

The phone # for Mitchell School is 734-997-1216. The ext. for our room is #25521.
