American Promise on PBS Tonight

Dear Mitchell Families,
I invite you to view American Promise which will be shown tonight on local PBS stations (10pm on Detroit Public TV). America Promise spans 13 years as Joe Brewster and Michèle Stephenson, middle-class African-American parents in Brooklyn, N.Y., turn  cameras on their son, Idris, and his best friend, Seun. During this time, the two boys are enrolled in the Dalton School in New York City, one of the most prestigious private schools in the country. Chronicling the boys' divergent paths from kindergarten through high school graduation, this provocative, intimate documentary presents complicated truths about America's struggle to come of age on issues of race, class and opportunity.
All of the Mitchell staff (and all of the AAPS staff) has already viewed American Promise as part of the district's commitment to equity and school improvement. Discussions about American Promise are occurring as part of our staff's equity team and school improvement work in our schools.
