Important Health Care/Medical Information

Hello, families!

As we approach the beginning of the 2021/2022 School Year, I am reaching out to families to update our health care plans at school.  Below is listed the required documentation for students with health care needs and/or medications at school.

Ann Arbor Schools requires a Medication Administration Form signed by both a physician and a parent or guardian in order to administer medications in school.

1. Medication Administration Form is for Administration of Medications by School Personnel - Prescription/ Non-prescription Medications.  Inhalers, Epi-pens, Ritalin, own supply of Tylenol, Ibuprofen) that are given to the student by school personnel.  Medication Administration Form

2. Self-Carry and Self-Administration Medication-This is for both prescription and non-prescription medications that the student will carry and administer (Ex: Ibuprofen, Inhaler, Epi-pens).  Medication Self-Administration Form

3. Medication Administration Forms from your doctor's office may also be used.  Please be sure there is a parent/guardian signature on the form along with the physician's signature.

MEDICATIONS: All medications must be dropped off by a parent.  Please make sure all medications (prescription and over the counter) are in their original packaging with prescription labels that match the medication forms.

Health Plans

Please submit updated Food Allergy/ Asthma Action Plans for those students with Asthma and/or Food Allergies.

Lunchroom:

There is a specific allergy table in the cafeteria that your child can sit at if preferred. The lunchroom staff are trained and assist students sitting at this table. Please let me know if you want your child to sit at the allergy table.

School Lunches:

If your child will be eating school lunches and has dietary restrictions, call the Food Service Office to speak with the Dietitian at 734-994-2265. Print and complete the Request for Dietary Needs form: Request for Special Dietary Needs Form

Another helpful item is that AAPS uses an interactive school menu called Nutrislicehttps://a2schools.nutrislice.com/menus-eula You can use this link to find out what is served for breakfast and lunch and navigate ingredients.

Immunizations

All students entering Y5, Kindergarten or new to AAPS are required by Michigan State Law to submit documentation of childhood immunizations. Please go here for more information.

Please feel free to contact me with any concern you may have or if your child has any health needs that may require an individualized Health Care Plan (HCP) prior to him/her starting school, please reach out to me by email at shipleyl@aaps.k12.mi.us  or my district cell phone 734 661-9742 as soon as possible.

Welcome Back to Mitchell School!

Dear Mitchell Families,

On behalf of the Mitchell staff, I welcome you to the 2021-22 school year. This letter contains important information about the beginning of school.

Hopes And Dreams 2021-22

Please share your hopes and dreams for your child with us at the Welcome Back Meet & Greet!

Welcome Back Meet & Greet - Classroom Assignments
Our PTO sponsored Welcome Back Meet & Greet event will be held outside on the Mitchell playground from 6:00-7:00pm on Tuesday, August 24. When you arrive, please visit the welcome back table on the basketball court. At this table, you'll receive an information packet as well as find out who your child's teacher will be this year. The Mitchell teachers will be spread out on the playground – please look for the ballon color of your child's grade.

Y5/Kindergarten – Yellow

First Grade – Blue

Second Grade – Orange

Third Grade – Green

Fourth Grade – Red

Fifth Grade – Light Blue

The Mitchell PTO will have welcome back popsicles for all!

Families needing to turn in enrollment paperwork may bring the documents to this event or make an appointment by calling 997-1216 over the coming week.

Small group school tours will be given to new and new to Y5/Kindergarten families only. Please meet at the main entrance and a Mitchell staff member will provide tours. Please be patient as we do small group tours. Masks are required inside and while optional outside, are encouraged.

*If you are not able to come, teacher assignments will be available by calling the school on Wednesday.

First Day of School

The first day of school is Monday, August 30, 2021.  This day will be a full day for students. Starting and ending times are as follows:

·     8:45 a.m. – 3:48 p.m.

Each day, the first bell rings at 8:45 a.m. and students will enter the building.  Please do not drop your children off early. There is no supervision before school.

Curriculum Night

The Mitchell School curriculum night is being planned for Tuesday, September 14 beginning at 6:00pm. I'm planning for this event to occur virtually, over Zoom. More details will be communicated as we near the date. For now, please mark your calendars!

Nametags

Please use the enclosed tag to prepare a name tag for your Young 5's, Kindergarten and/or First grade student. Include all of their vital information (name, address, phone number, bus number, and teacher name) and tie it to your child's backpack for the first week of school.  This will assist the staff that will be helping students (especially students new to Mitchell) find their way to classrooms and buses.

  • Name tags for Y5, K and 1st grade families will be sent via US Postal Service.

Breakfast/Lunch

Breakfast and lunch will be free of charge for the 2021-22 school year!

Of course, children may also bring snacks and a lunch from home.

Immunizations for 2021-22

Please be sure that your child's immunizations are up to date by the start of school! All pre-school, Young 5, Kindergarten and new students at any grade MUST provide proof of immunization before August 30, 2021. Please bring the immunization records to the school office.

For information about free/low cost immunizations, how to get a waiver, and more, visit the AAPS immunization page: http://a2schools.org/Page/8151

Updated Medical Response Plans and Medication

As a reminder to parents/guardians whose children are medically sensitive, please turn in updated medical response plans from your child's physician to the school office before school begins.  An updated plan is required each year and/or any time there is a change in your child's health.

Also, as a reminder to all parents, children may not take medication at school unless we have written instructions from your physician.  This includes over the counter (non-prescription) medication.  For families with medically sensitive children, please turn in medication on or before the first day of school.

Mitchell School Is Nut-Restricted
Nuts are allowed at Mitchell School. However, there are students in the building with life-threatening allergies.  This means the building is a nut-restricted building. Some rooms in the building are designated as "No Nut" areas.  If this is the case, a sign will be posted outside the room and teachers will communicate with classroom parents.

Bus Schedule

The bus schedule for Mitchell and the morning pick up times are posted! You can find this information posted at this link:

Mitchell School Bus Routes

Student Pick Up/Drop Off

If you drive your child to school or pick them up at the end of the day, please follow the posted signs around the school.

§ NO PARKING in the front circle drive.  Stay in your car.  Pull all the way forward. Kids exit the car on the curb side of the drive.

§ NO CELL PHONES in the front drive. Safety first!

§ ARRIVE ON TIME. Late arrivals disrupt the learning of others. Please be on time.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Unless you have enrolled your child in Morning Care through the Rec & Ed department, please do not drop your children off at school before 8:45 a.m. as there is no adult supervision.

Parking at Mitchell

There are some parking spots available in front of Mitchell School.  Additional parking is available in the Scarlett parking lot behind Mitchell School. If you need to come into the building, by appointment only, we ask that you park your car in one of our parking lots. Please, NO PARKING IN THE CIRCLE DRIVE – traffic backs up and creates hazards as other parents have to pull out and around parked cars. Thank you!

We look forward to working with you and your child(ren) to make this a great school year.  If you have any questions, please call the Mitchell office or your child's teacher and we'll do our best to answer them.

Sincerely,

Matt & Alison

Welcome Back COVID Information

Dear Mitchell Families,

On behalf of the Mitchell staff, I want to share with you the COVID guidelines that will be in place as we begin our school year together. As we go through our year together, I will certainly keep you informed and updated if any changes occur.

Universal Masking

Children will be expected to wear their masks at all times, except when eating or drinking, while in the school building. To assist with mask breaks and to help mitigate the spread of the COVID virus, whenever possible, teachers will be coordinating to provide students with opportunities to learn, eat, and socialize outside during the school day. When children are outside, they may remove their masks and will not be expected to keep them on.

Physical Distancing

We will do our very best to maintain physical distancing of 3 feet. Yet, there will be times when 3 feet of physical distance will simply not be possible. Seating charts will be in place in classrooms, the lunchroom and all special area classes. In the event of a confirmed case, our seating charts will allow for timely and effective contact tracing.

Contact Tracing

The procedures and expectations for contact tracing are included in the Health & Wellness section below.

Cohorting

At the elementary level, we will work to maintain cohorts of students by grade level. To the extent feasible, we will maintain these cohorts throughout the day. Students will go to recess as cohort groups and will not mingle with other cohorts while outside. There will be times, specifically at lunch, where two grade level cohorts may be in a space together – see below for lunchtime details.

Breakfast/Lunch

Breakfast and lunch will be free for all students through the entire school year. There are a few important procedures that I want you to be aware of regarding food service.

  • Breakfast – As students enter the building, they will have the choice of taking a pre-packaged breakfast off the breakfast cart stationed just inside the front door. Students will eat breakfast in their classrooms.
  • Lunch – We will do our very best to utilize outdoor spaces and spread out during the lunch hour. Having said that, I also want you to understand that there may be times when there are two grade levels in the MPR at the same time for lunch – one grade level at each end of the MPR. We will stagger the entrance of each grade level into the building, space kids out in the lunch line, have assigned seats by classroom at tables and ensure kids have the opportunity to wash their hands before eating. Additionally, we will clean and disinfect all tables between lunch sessions. Kids will be expected to keep their masks on from the moment they enter the building and keep them on until they sit down to eat. When finished eating, kids will be expected to put their masks back on. With the above in place, we will minimize close contacts.
  • Noon Hour Supervision – To help support our ability to supervise and spread kids out during lunch, I am looking for additional noon hour supervisors. I'm hoping there may be some parents (or others you may know) who are interested in becoming a noon hour supervisor at Mitchell. Here are the details:
    • Commitment – I'm hoping to find people who can commit to five days each week. Yet, I'm certainly open to those who may only be able to do a few days per week. A typical work day will run from 11:30-1:30.
    • Expectations – Interact and supervise children with a positive, warm and caring approach.
    • Pay Rate – The rate for noon hour supervisors is $16.50 per hour.
    • If you're interested, please email me at hiltonm@aaps.k12.mi.us as soon as possible. Additionally, please fill out the AAPS Noon Hour Application as soon as possible. The job ID # is 11658 – Noon/Lunch Hour Supervisor.

Bus Transportation

The following rules apply on the bus:

  • All drivers, monitors and students are required to wear a mask at all times while riding the bus.
  • Hand sanitizer is placed on every bus and all staff and students are required to use sanitizer upon entry to the bus.
  • Windows will be open, weather permitting (dress appropriately), to circulate air.
  • Assigned seats will be established to ensure distancing and to limit contact.

Arrival & Departure Procedures

Mitchell's parking lot is very busy at the beginning and end of the day. In order to ensure everyone's safety, please take caution when driving through the parking lot.

Please read the guidelines below as there are additional COVID safety protocols.

Health and Wellness

COVID Safety Protocols

  • All staff and students are required to wear a mask at all times inside the building, except when eating and drinking.
  • Hand sanitizer stations are placed in every classroom and throughout the building. All staff and students are encouraged to use sanitizer upon entry and exit of classrooms and other spaces.
  • Seating charts will be established in every classroom to support contact tracing, as needed.
  • All parent/guardian and other meetings, including school events, remain virtual.

Family Responsibilities

  • Screen your student for symptoms each morning before sending them to school. Do not send them to school with symptoms.
  • Immediately notify the building principal if your student or someone in your household tests positive for COVID-19. Speak with a district contact tracer as needed for an investigation.
  • Ensure your student has a mask and water bottle every day. Masks will be provided to those who do not have one.
  • Be available to pick your student up from school should they begin to show symptoms while at school.
  • Understand that students or staff may need to quarantine if there is a classroom case.

Student Responsibilities

  • Wear a mask at all times, except when eating and drinking or when outside.
  • Bring a personal water bottle daily.
  • Follow school rules and stay in assigned seats.
  • Monitor health status and report symptoms immediately to an adult.

What Are The Public Health Protocols for Students & Families?

The Ann Arbor Public Schools is closely following the Washtenaw Community Health Department guidance administered on August 9, 2021. We can expect to see new research, new guidance and new waves of cases throughout the year. I will certainly communicate any and all changes to Mitchell families.

What Happens If There Is A Confirmed Case?

Families must notify their principal immediately of a positive case. Families must cooperate with district contact tracers and follow all isolation procedures. The procedures for close contacts and quarantine are as follows:

  • A close contact is defined as being within 3 feet for 15 minutes or more, cumulative.
  • If asymptomatic, vaccinated close contacts can attend school with a PCR test recommended 3-5 days post exposure.
  • If asymptomatic, unvaccinated close contacts can 1) quarantine at home for 10 days or 2) attend school and get tested twice per week using the Rapid Antigen Test during the quarantine period. Until a vaccine is approved for those younger than 12, this will be the case for most all elementary students.
  • If symptomatic, stay home through the quarantine period and until feeling better.

Communication will be made to both close contacts and the classroom community. No confidential information will be shared.

What Happens if My Child Develops Symptoms Related to Covid-19 at School?

1.     If your child develops symptoms of COVID-19 at school, they will be brought to our health support room, an isolated location away from the rest of the school population. Children will be supervised.

2.     The child's family will be contacted and a member of the family is expected to pick the child up from school immediately.

3.     The child must remain home until:

  • They receive a negative COVID test,
  • Receive a differential diagnosis from a physician,
  • 10 day quarantine and symptoms are gone.

We are looking forward to the start of the school year at Mitchell School! Certainly, we will all work together to ensure the health and wellness of all Mitchell students, staff and families. If you have questions now, please reach out and we will help.

Sincerely,

Matt & Alison
