Hybrid Instruction Begins for 4th and 5thGraders
We are looking forward to welcoming back our 4th and 5th grades students to hybrid instruction beginning the week of May 3. I've linked some information below as a friendly reminder to our fourth and fifth grade families that are returning in the cohort format. If you have any questions, please let use know – we can help!
AAPS Summer School Opportunities
The AAPS Elementary Remote Learning Expeditions are learning opportunities for students in grades Y5, K, 1, 2, 3, and 4 and were created to honor and leverage the knowledge, skills, and abilities that all families bring to student learning. The program's ultimate goal is to engage students in new and exciting ways. While students are learning, they will also be participating in a game! Each adventure provides authentic learning connected to grade level goals and objectives with the opportunity to earn badges.
Please know the following:
- These programs are open to all currently enrolled AAPS students, Y5-4th grade.
- Learn more about these programs on our AAPS Summer Learning Program website.
- Enrollment will be on a first come, first served basis, and dependent on staff availability.
- 2021 Remote Learning Expeditions Enrollment Form (remote, synchronous)
- 2021 A2 Virtual Elementary Summer Success Program Enrollment Form (remote, asynchronous, self-paced)
- Enrollment closes on Friday, 5/7.

May 4th is Now a School Day
May 4th was initially posted as no school due to Election Day. However, with no Ann Arbor election that day, AAPS will be in session on May 4th. Carpenter Elementary will be on all virtual/remote learning due to an election in Pittsfield Township. The full calendar is available here.
When Should I Keep My Child Home?
The AAPS school nurses have put together a short video for parents regarding student health and keeping kids home from school. Please take a few minutes to watch this video:
NWEA MAP Assessments
Over the coming two weeks, Mitchell 3-5thGraders will be taking the NWEA Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) Assessment in Reading and Math. The Mitchell 2ndgraders will take the NWEA math assessment and a district designed assessment for reading. We give these tests to help determine a student's instructional level and help provide more information about each child so we can better help them grow as readers and mathematicians.
Note: Mitchell K-1stgrade students will be taking the Lexia auto-placement assessment for reading and a district designed assessment for math. These assessments will occur later this spring and I will announce the dates as we get closer.

AAPS 4th& 5thGrade Student Return – Delayed Until May 3
As you've most likely heard, the AAPS Board of Education made the decision to postpone the return of 4thand 5thgrade students until Monday, May 3, 2021 due to the increase and spread of COVID. At this point, we will continue the hybrid instruction for our PK-3rdgrade students and plan on the return of grades 4 and 5 on Monday, May 3.
If you have any questions, please let us know!
Mitchell Library Books
Do you have school library books at home?
- Please bring those books to school to be returned to the library. If you have books from another building, those books can be returned to our building as well. Look for a yellow cart near the main office
- If you are remaining virtual for the remainder of the school year, hold onto AAPS library books until we can all return this school year or until next fall.
- Librarians will be emailing library book notices next week (with book titles included) in the event you do not remember what books you have checked out. No fines will be given for lost or damaged books.
- Please contact Mrs. Duncan at duncanj@aaps.k12.mi.us with any questions or concerns.
